Amesbury RFC 12 – 22 Pewsey Vale RFC
Built on a foundation of solid defence and territory Pewsey Vale crafted a creditable win in a very competitive match. Amesbury enjoyed significant periods of possession but were unable to establish attacking field position and capitalise on Pewsey errors.
With 10 minutes on the clock, at the base of a Pewsey penalty scrum ten metres from the home side’s line, number eight Phil Vallis executed a pick and go hitting the whitewash for the five points. Scrum-half Tom Flippance adding the extras.
Play then centred in mid-field. On the half hour Amesbury, in a rare foray into Pewsey Vale’s twenty-two drove forward from a line out; the loose head prop crashing over for the try, converted.
Half Time: Amesbury 7 – 7 Pewsey Vale
Ten minutes into the second half, Pewsey drove forward and released prop Olly Spence from twenty metres out, he rocketed forward, breaking through several tackles, dotting down between the posts, Tom Flippance converting once again.
At the end of the third quarter Amesbury, awarded a penalty, kicked for posts with the ball drifting wide. A mix up in the Pewsey defence by not catching the ball allowed a chasing Amesbury centre to score, unconverted.
With five minutes to go Olly Spence took a quick tap penalty to run in unopposed, unconverted. Vale finished the day with a Sam Flippance penalty with 1 minute remaining taking any hope of a fight back away from the home side.
Final Score: Amesbury 12 – 22 Pewsey Vale.
